NBA Jock MKT Play (12/29)

Jock MKT is one of the most interesting forms of DFS. In this article, I’ll break down what Jock MKT is and my favorite NBA buy for tonight’s slate.

What Is Jock MKT?

The simplest way to outline this is daily fantasy sports meets the stock market. You’ll purchase shares of players for varying amounts, depending on how much others are willing to pay for them during the IPO. Once the Live Trading starts, you can buy players that others want to sell or sell your players during the game. Once all of the games have ended, you will receive money based on how well your player performs compared to the field on the Jock MKT app for this week.

12/29 Buy

Luka Garza, C, Detroit Pistons

Highest Potential Bid: $3.00

Break-Even Point: 52

If you’re new to Jock MKT, you may be struggling to read what’s listed below the Garza recommendations. Essentially, I’m willing to spend up to $3 per share for Garza. He needs to finish 52nd in the field for me to make my money back with the opportunity for me to make more if he finishes higher.

For example, if I buy 1 share of Garza at $3 and he finishes 52nd in this field, I make my $3 back. If he finishes 1st, I win $25 (profit $22). If he finishes last, I win $1 (lose $2). It’s that simple.

Garza’s played limited minutes for the Detroit Pistons throughout his rookie season. He’s averaging 4.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in only 9.3 minutes per game. Expanding his numbers, Garza’s averaging 17.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals on a per-36 minute basis this season. Unfortunately, he’s also averaging 6.3 fouls in that time. If you don’t remember, he was arguably the most dominant player in college basketball last season, and that could take over when given minutes in the NBA.

Over his final two seasons as an Iowa Hawkeye, Garza averaged 24 points with 9.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.7 blocks in 31.7 minutes per game. He’s a player that can score at all levels, and he’s flashed that ability in the pros.

Garza was forced into bigger minutes in his last game. He posted 30.5 fantasy points in only 20 minutes, although he fouled out in that game. Garza will likely play 25+ minutes if he’s able to stay on the court. Detroit continues to be without several players because of Covid protocols, and that will force Garza into a bigger offensive role again.

He doesn’t get a great matchup, as the New York Knicks have found success against centers throughout the season. They’ve also found plenty of success in recent games. With that being said, they haven’t faced a player that has the scoring versatility of Garza.

He ranks 99th in Jock MKT’s pre-rank, as he owns a projection of 19.46 fantasy points. Garza comes with tremendous upside when on the floor. The biggest issue will continue to be foul trouble. If Garza gets 25+ minutes tonight, he could return quite the value. It’s important to note that I considered leaving his price at only $2.50, but I opted to increase it to $3 because of his pure upside in this type of role.
