After having Monday off with game 5 of the NBA finals, today we a nice size 3 game slate with some good games on deck. Lets jump right in and see who are the plays for tonight slate.
Mystics vs Sun
The Mystics roll into town tonight to take on the red-hot Sun in what will be a season opener rematch. In the first match up between these teams the Sun topped an Elena Delle Donne less Mystics in a blowout. Tonight, the Mystics have EDD back and this is a match up she has done well in with a 44, 41 and a 30-fantasy points in her three match ups last season. We have yet to have a big EDD game this season where she has had to take over due to blow outs or others stepping up, but tonight is a perfect time to get that game from EDD with her price a bit lower than some of the other big named studs making her one of my favorite plays tonight.
Last game we saw Tina Hawkins set a new career high in points leading the Mystics over the Wings. She hasn’t seen a drastic price increase on either site making her still playable. On Fanduel I would still take LaToya Sanders over her especially in GPP due to recency bias. Sanders had a down game only scoring 2 points on 3 shot attempts. Sanders is still the starter and has a more secure roll in minutes, her defensive skills should be needed tonight to compete with the Sun.
The guards from the Mystic are in a tough match up with the Sun back court and did not play well against them last time out. Atkins has continued to disappoint since her big 31-fantasy point. With her reduced price and coming off some down games she makes a great GPP target who should be lower owned than the likes of Cloud and Toliver. Toliver price on Fanduel makes her favorable for cash if this game stays close, she should pay off her salary.
I’m not sure how many more ways I can type good things about Jonquel Jones. Jones has been a powerhouse to start the season doing it all on both ends of the court and averaging a double double. Jones now has 4 straight games of over 40-fantasy points! Her only game with 37-fantasy points was against this Mystics team, but she is on fire. I can see reason to possibly fade Jones in GPP or to be contrarians because she has to come back down to earth sooner or later. She is one of the safer plays in cash games.
As always from the Sun playing anyone from the core four is a good way to start most builds as they all produce consistently and are not priced to high or to low. A case can always be made to take the savings for Alyssa Thomas over Jones at the forward position on DraftKings. Thomas dropped 39 fantasy points in the season opener, but this is her only 30-point outing against this team in in the past year. Another GPP option would be Shekinna Stricklen who can get hot at any moment from 3 and is playing high 20 minutes a game.
Strom vs Fever
Off to a great start to the season the Fever are 3-2 and ready to bounce back tonight. The Fever may have 3 wins on the season, but those wins are against some of the bottom teams in the league (New York and Dallas). We already know the Fever love to ride the hot hand with Wheeler and the Mitchells, but Wheeler is still a more consistent player even though she saw a reduced roll last game mostly due to blow out. When attacking the Storm, we want to play the guards against them, and I have no problem going back to Wheeler in this match up especially on DraftKings at $7600. K. Mitchell has looked much better as of late and is another good option.
Candice Dupree has not looked too good in her last few games but has a match up she has done well in last season with two 40-fantasy point games last season. Dupree will be under owned with some of the other top Studs in better match up and is a good pivot option in GPP. A player that I have some interest in for the Fever who saw some extra run that was not blowout minutes was Kennedy Burke. The rookie for the Fever had a few sets run for her and looked good out there with the starting unit hitting 4-4 from 3. Burke is GPP option who could get some run if this game blows out and the Storm takes a commanding lead.
The Storm come in tonight as a 2-point underdog. Let that sit with you for a second. Okay now let’s look at it. The last time the Strom came in as an underdog against a team they should beat they flat out lost. Vegas must really know something I don’t know so I’m not even going to try and understand it.
With the storm we know the 2 guards to play and to play Howard who has such a high usage and seems to be living at the free throw line as she is in the top 5 in free throws attempted to start the season. The fever are one of the highest fouling teams in the league so this should body well for Howard to get to the line like she tends to do. Both sites seem reluctant to price Mercedes Russell up even with her playing high 20 minutes. Russell minutes are secured, and I like her as a value play again today.
Mercury vs Sky
The dynamic duo of Griner and Bonner was on full display last game against the Fever as they lead the Mercury to a win. Today they get the defensively challenged Sky who they have both had some fantastic games against. Griner is priced perfectly on DraftKings right below both Howard and Jones. Bonner on the other hand is the most expensive play on the slate at 12k. You can stack the two together or run one or the other with Griner being my favorite of the two.
Last slate I said “If looking for value on the Mercury Leilani Mitchell played 24 minutes and is still priced at the minimum on Fanduel for $3300. She should be able to pay off that price tag if she’s getting the same number of minutes and lets you fit in some of the big Studs.” I stand by that again as neither site has really adjusted her price making her a free square especially on Fanduel where she is still priced at $3600.
All of the guards for the Mercury outside of Bonner are priced really low for the upside they have in this matchup. Briann January has been consistent with three 20 plus fantasy point games. Essence Carson and Yvonne Turner are both playing less minutes with Mitchell playing off the bench. All of them are in play but Turner and Carson are better suited for GPP.
The Sky are out to show the WNBA world that they are the real deal. Pulling off the win over the defending champs they proved they can really hang with the best of them when they are locked in and focused on both ends of the court. With the Sky we know it all begins with the guards Vandersloot, Quigley and DeShields. Out of the trio Vandersloot has been the most consistent as far as production. Quigley needs her shot to fall if she wants to give us any kind of fantasy production and DeShields is mispriced as she is priced above Sloot. In order of preference of the trio for me would be Sloot>DeShields>Quigley.
Cheyenne Parker showed out last game with a 40-point fantasy game in limited minutes. Tonight, she gets a match up she has done very well in last season with a 22, 31, 32 fantasy point games. Parker is a PPM player when she is on the court and can literally got you 30-fantasy points or 2-fantasy points. I like this match up for her tonight as I don’t see Dolson being able to guard Griner for long. This will become a group effort for the Sky bigs.
