Slate Thoughts:

  • In cash games this week, you want to look at the game that has the highest total on the slate and that is UNC vs. Syracuse.  Last year we witnessed Sam Howell grow up right before our very eyes, and quietly became one of the best quarterbacks in the country.  This year he returns to UNC and has no shortage of weapons at his disposal.  Howell and UNC will be taking on a Syracuse defense that struggled quite a bit last year. I fully expect UNC to have their way with this Syracuse defense, which is why Howell would be the first guy I plug into my cash game lineups.  Howell provides us with the safest floor of any QB on the slate and possibly the highest ceiling of any QB on the slate, making him a great tournament play as well.  If playing Howell I would look to stack him with either of his stud wide receivers, D. Newsome or D. Brown.  Both Newsome and Brown are in phenomenal spots this weekend and make for really good plays in all formats.  Stacking all 3 in tournaments is a viable strategy as well.
  • The next guy I will look to have plenty of is Breece Hall.  Hall had a really productive season last year for the Iowa State Cyclones.  He is probably my favorite RB on this slate and offers us not only a great floor, but a very high ceiling as well.  UL of Lafayette was not great last year stopping the run, allowing almost 180 rush yards per game, and I expect them to struggle with it again this  year.  I expect ISU to lean on the run early and I see Hall having a very good day.  Hall is playable in all formats.
  • Last week we witnessed EKU get absolutely dismantled by Marshall 59-0.  This week, EKU will face West Virginia.  WVU is currently 40 pt favorites, which could possibly limit the upside of some of the players from WVU.  With that said, if this game stays a little closer than the current spread, we could see some West Virginia players put up some very impressive numbers.  QB J. Doege will get the start for the Mountaineers, and after watching how Marshall torched EKU through the air last week, it makes me like Doege that much more.  He will be looking to hit his top WR in Sam James as often as possible.  James has a pretty high price tag for this particular slate, so some decisions will have to be made.  Overall, I think that West Virginia is an interesting tournament play, and if EKU can keep things somewhat close, Doege and James could take you to the top of your tournaments.
  • On guy that I feel is priced way to low is QB Skylar Thompson of Kansas State.  Thompson is a dual threat QB that scored 11 rushing touchdowns last year while also throwing for 12.  He will be taking on an Arkansas State team that really struggled on the defensive end last week allowing 230 rush yards.  For $6400 he is almost a lock for me in cash games and I will be overweight on him in tournaments.
  • Finally, with all of the high priced guys we’ve mentioned above, you are going to need some value guys.  A few values that stand out to me currently are RB H. Trotter, WR C. Kolar, QB C. Brice, RB J. Mason, WR D. Fleming and WR D. Green.  All of these value plays can be played in all formats.  I definitely think that DK dropped the ball on pricing Mason. I really like him at RB this week.
