Gator’s PGA Showdown Throwdown – WGC Mexico

WGC – MEXICO CHAMPIONSHIP

Round 1 Showdown

Club de Golf Chaputltepec, Mexico

Scoring, Eagle +11, Birdie +5.75, Par +1.5, Bogey -1.8

The tournament has been held at Club de Golf Chaputltepec for two years so we have a small sample size for this week’s tournament.

Phil Mickelson $8900

Last years winner, a winner already this season, and has shot two 67’s in previous first rounds at this course, T10 in Birdie average this year and always goes for it, Showdown slates are all about Birdies and Eagles, Phil has to be on the list !!!

Rickie Fowler $9600

Shot 68 and 69 in previous first rounds in Mexico and has a win already this year, 5th for Birdie average this season.  I think a build around Phil and Rickie is a great way to start.

Sergio Garcia $8400

Has to like this course layout, has won at altitude at Crans – sur -Sierre, Switzerland, and has owned property there too. Shot 68 and 68 on previous starts in Mexico, can blow hot and cold (to say the least), but Sergio will want to put this month behind him so should be driven.

Rafa Cabrera Bello $7600

Shot a 66 in the opening round last year and is currently T43 in birdie average, stats and course layout suggest Rafa should go well this week

Marc Leishman  $9100

I have dropped him down the list but still worthy of consideration, 11th in Birdie average and started last year, 69 68, 69 before shooting a 77 in the final round and played well last week

Tyrell Hatton $7400

Missed cut last week could put a few people off but obvious credentials this week finishing T3 and 10th in previous visits with an opening round of 65 last year, not always great first round scorer but worth consideration to save $

Lee Westwood $6800

Always worth consideration in 1st round scoring 69,67,66, in previous 3 events and won in South Africa in November, my theory is Westwood it at his best in Rnd 1

Players who have shot in 60’s in previous 4 opening rounds include;

Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Marc Leishman (5), Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter, Charles Howell III, Patrick Reed, Keegan Bradley,
