Trevis’ PGA Plays – Mayakoba Golf Classic

During the “regular season” (or so I call it), my PGA Punt Plays article was fire for the last month or two. Almost every week near the end I targeted and touted an extremely cheap golfer that wound up finishing in the top 10 (a handful in the top 5!). I now will take that same approach and research and apply it to a handful of golfers who may or may not get a ton of exposure, but who I think match up perfectly with the event’s course and who have decent recent form.

Weekly Recap

Last week both Cash plays (Cantlay & Piercy) finished top 10 with Cantlay getting 2nd place. Kim (GPP play) was in 2nd place after Day 2 at just 2% ownership, but faltered late.

Mayakoba Golf Classic

This event is played at the El Camaleon GC in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It plays as a Par 71 at 6987 yards with Paspalum greens. This course is pretty unique in terms of all of the variables just mentioned. I’m going to change up my article just a tad here as there aren’t any other courses that match this one for “recent form on relative course” sake.

Charles Howell III – $9500 DK | $10700 FD (CASH)

CH3 has made the cut at this event 4 of the last 5 years. 3 of those 4 times he finished in the top 7 with last year being his best at 4th place. There is an extremely minimal amount of courses that feature these type of greens, so take the recent form with a grain of salt. That being said, CH3 clocks in at 7th overall in total strokes gained.

Si Woo Kim – $9200 DK | $10100 FD (CASH)

Kim hasn’t been cut here in the last 3 years, but he did W/D 2 years ago. He made up for that with a 3rd place finish here last year. Kim is the leader in recent form of all my plays coming in at 4th overall in total strokes gained.

Pat Perez – $7700 DK | $9500 FD (CASH/GPP)

Patty P followed up being cut here 3 years ago with a 1st place finish the following year. He is 4 for 5 on making the cut in recent history. He comes in at 16th overall in total strokes gained.

Patton Kizzire – $7300 DK | $8100 FD (GPP)

Patty K has not been cut from this event in the last 5 years. However, he only played twice in that span and took the whole thing down here last year. He clocks in at 9th overall in total strokes gained.

Scott Brown – $6800 DK |$7100 FD (GPP)

Scotty B is a perfect 5 for 5 on making the cut here with finishing top 6 in 2 of the last 3 years. He comes in at 25th overall in total strokes gained. At $6800, he is worth taking the flyer.
