Total Base Race – Toronto Blue Jays/New York Yankees

The New York Yankees get an elite matchup against Clayton Richard tonight. He has posted an 0-3 record with a 7.46 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP through six starts. His struggles are backed with a 5.62 xFIP and a 5.95 SIERA. Richard has held his opponents to 23.3% fly ball rates, while giving up a 25% HR/FB rate in 2019. Furthermore, his opponents have recorded a 41.9% hard hit rate against him to go along with a 24.4% soft hit rate. Richard has struggled more against right-handed batters this season, allowing them to hit for a .320 average with a .613 slugging percentage and a .421 wOBA. He has also allowed a .303/.606/.418 line on the road in 2019. DJ LeMahieu has been arguably the hottest hitter in the MLB recently, posting a .452 average with a .762 slugging percentage and a 1.273 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns six extra-base hits (three home runs) in those games, as well. Surprisingly, he has only posted 33% hard hit and 18% fly ball rates with an 88 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. He owns 0.022 wOBA and 0.022 ISO differentials against left-handed pitching. I’m willing to look passed LeMahieu’s advanced numbers in favor of his current production in this matchup. Gary Sanchez has been performing well recently, as well, posting a .270 average with a .595 slugging percentage and a .928 OPS over his last 10 games. He has also recorded six extra-base hits (three home runs) in those contests. Sanchez boasts 50% hard hit and 36% fly ball rates with a 92 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days, as well. He’s a player that has also been at his best against left-handed pitching, posting 0.025 wOBA and 0.044 ISO differentials against lefties. Luke Voit is another player who has found success against lefties, posting a 0.013 ISO differential against lefties. He has found success over the last 15 days, as well, recording 44% hard hit and 29% fly ball rates with a 94 MPH exit velocity over that span. He’s also hitting .333 with a .472 slugging percentage and a .939 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns three extra-base hits (one home run) in those games, as well. The Yankees feature an elite implied run total of 7.7 runs, and the majority of their offense is likely to find success. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are two other options who could have value in this play if you’re looking for alternate options.
