Total Base Race – Baltimore Orioles/Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers get the best matchup on the slate tonight. They’ll face off against David Hess, who has posted a 1-7 record with a 7.36 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP through 12 games (11 starts). He has also struggled with a 5.73 xFIP and a 5.21 SIERA. Hess has also allowed ridiculous 51.4% fly ball and 21.3% HR/FB rates in 2019. Furthermore, his opponents have recorded 40.7% hard hit and 13.6% soft hit rates this season. Hess’ strikeout rate sits at 19.4%, while he also brings an 8.4% swinging strike rate into this game. He has been a reverse splits pitcher early this season, allowing his opponents to hit for a .279 average with a .706 slugging percentage and a .422 wOBA. He has also allowed lefties to hit for a .267/.430/.334 line, though. Furthermore, he has given up a .264/.535/.346 line on the road in 2019. The Rangers should find plenty of success in this game, as they are -181 favorite with the total being set at 11 runs, giving them an implied run total of 6.4 runs. Danna Santana hasn’t been playing well recently, but he has seen limited opportunities over his last 10 games. He has also posted a 60% hard hit rate with a 94 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. His struggles have come from a 53% ground ball rate, which likely won’t be a concern against Hess tonight. Santana also enters this game with 0.022 wOBA and 0.103 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching. Elvis Andrus is in a similar position as Santana, as he has struggled quite a bit recently, although he has seen full time at-bats. Andrus is hitting .284 with a .451 slugging percentage and a .775 OPS at home, though. He owns 10 extra-base hits (3 home runs) in those 25 games, as well. Andrus has also posted 38% hard hit and 42% fly ball rates with a 92 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Hunter Pence enters this game with 33% hard hit and fly ball rates to go along with a 91 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. He’s also hitting .244 with a .415 slugging percentage and a .726 OPS over his last 10 games. He has posted four extra-base hits (one home run) in those games. The Rangers should find plenty of success in this matchup, and this trio is hitting near the top of the order with the ability to possess consistency and power at the plate.
