Total Base Race – Tampa Bay Rays/Toronto Blue Jays

The Tampa Bay Rays come with quite a bit of upside, and they get a great matchup against Aaron Sanchez today. Sanchez enters this game with a 5.31 xFIP and a 5.46 SIERA through 22 starts. He has struggled with a 28.9% fly ball rate, although he has given up a 15.2% HR/FB rate in 2019. He has also allowed his opponents to post a 38.8% hard hit rate to go along with an 18.1% soft hit rate this season. Sanchez has been at his worst against right-handed batters in 2019, allowing them to hit for a .307 average with a .455 slugging percentage and a .377 wOBA. He has also given up a .278/.458/.346 line to left-handed batters this season. He has also allowed his opponents to post a .270/.415/.343 line against him in Toronto. Tommy Pham hasn’t been playing overly well recently, as he’s only hitting .179 with a .308 average and a .612 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns three extra-base hits (one home run) in those games. Pham has been a slightly more powerful option against right-handed pitching, entering this game with a 0.03 ISO differential against righties. Austin Meadows has seen plenty of ups and downs recently, as he owns a .263 average with a .500 slugging percentage and a .833 OPS over his last 10 games. He boasts five extra-base hits (one home run) in those games, as well. He enters this game with 50% hard hit and 39% fly ball rates to go along with a 93 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Meadows brings 0.079 wOBA and 0.051 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching into this game, as well. Travis d’Arnaud is the final piece of the puzzle, and he has posted a .278 average with a .806 slugging percentage and a 1.201 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns seven extra-base hits (six home runs) over that span. In those games, d’Arnaud has recorded 50% hard hit and 46% fly ball rates to go along with a 93 MPH exit velocity, as well. The Rays haven’t been playing at that high of a level recently, but they get a great matchup against Sanchez, who has struggled throughout the season. It has kept Tampa Bay’s total low, and we can take advantage of that.
