Total Base Race – Boston Red Sox/Detroit Tigers

The Boston Red Sox have been a better offense at home, but they get an elite matchup against Gregory Soto today. He has been arguably the worst starting pitcher in the MLB this season, posting a 6.10 xFIP and a 5.88 SIERA through seven games (six starts). He has given up 38.8% fly ball and 16.1% HR/FB rates this season, as well. He has also allowed his opponents to hit for a 42% hard hit rate to go along with a 16% soft hit rate in 2019. Soto has been significantly worse against right-handed batters, allowing them to hit for a .329 average with a .632 slugging percentage and a .415 wOBA. He has given up a .259/.414/.330 line at home this season, as well. Mookie Betts has been playing at a high level recently, posting a .317 average with a .512 slugging percentage and a .932 OPS over his last 10 games. He also owns five extra-base hits (one home run) in those games. Betts boasts a 50% hard hit rate to go along with a 95 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. He has been better against right-handed pitching this season, but has found plenty of success against lefties throughout his career. J.D. Martinez is another right-handed batter, who should find success in this matchup. He enters this game with .069 wOBA and .106 ISO differentials against left-handed pitching. Martinez has also been playing well recently, posting a .349 average with a .558 slugging percentage and a .949 OPS over his last 10 games. He has recorded five extra-base hits (two home runs) over that span, as well. Martinez also brings a 41% hard hit rate with a 91 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days into this game. Rafael Devers has been significantly better against right-handed pitching, but it’s impossible to avoid him, as he’s one of the hottest hitters in the MLB recently. He is hitting .465 with a .907 slugging percentage and a 1.428 OPS over his last 10 games. He has posted 11 extra-base hits (4 home runs) in those contests, as well. Devers has also recorded 53% hard hit and 41% fly ball rates to go along with a 94 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. This total is a bit high, but Boston should have no problems dominating a pitcher that is likely going to be out of the MLB shortly.
