MLB Jock MKT Plays (5/12/22)

Jock MKT is fun new way to play DFS. In this article, I’ll break down what Jock MKT is and my favorite MLB buys for tonight’s slate.

What Is Jock MKT?

The simplest way to outline this is daily fantasy sports meets the stock market. You’ll purchase shares of players for varying amounts, depending on how much others are willing to pay for them during the IPO. Once the Live Trading starts, you can buy players that others want to sell or sell your players during the game. Once all of the games have ended, you will receive money based on how well your player performs compared to the field on the Jock MKT app for the night.

5/12/22 Top Buy

Nick Castellanos, Philadelphia Phillies

Potential Bid: $5.50

Break-Even Point: 31st

If you’re new to Jock MKT, you may be struggling to read what’s listed below the Castellanos recommendation. Essentially, I’m willing to spend up to $5.50 per share for him. He needs to finish 31st in the field for me to make my money back with the opportunity for me to make more if he finishes higher.

For example, if I buy 1 share of Castellanos at $5.50 and he finishes 31st in this field, I make my $5.50 back. If he finishes 1st, I win $25 (profit $19.50). If he finishes last, I win $1 (lose $4.50). It’s that simple.

We have a smaller set of games on Thursday but that doesn’t mean we have a lack of offense. No game has a total above 8 runs, so we really need to dig into the individual spots to find the best plays. Philly matches up with Tyler Anderson, who has been one of the more mediocre pitchers on this slate when we look at the last few seasons worth of data. More importantly, his biggest issue has been power to right-handed batters allowing a .220 ISO since the start of 2021. Castellanos has power, but is also just one of the best-overall hitters vs left-handed pitching. Over that same span, he owns a massive .423 wOBA and .299 ISO in the split. Furthermore, Anderson throws his change-up over 30% of the time vs right-handed batters — making it his second-most used pitch. Casty is one of the better change hitters on the Phillies with a .414 expected wOBA vs the pitch. Overall, I think this is one of the better games just given the quality of offense on both sides and I want Castellanos anytime he’s against a southpaw pitcher.

Secondary Buy

Justin Turner, Los Angeles Dodgers

Potential Bid: $5.34

Break-Even Point: 32nd

As I noted above, both of these teams are good offensively forcing my attention there on a smaller slate. Zach Wheeler was one of the best pitchers in baseball last season, but after an injury-riddled Spring Training he has struggled to start this season. His strikeout numbers are down, but the swing and miss numbers are still really good so there is optimism. Regardless, Turner is one of the better hitters on this team even against right-handed pitching. Wheeler throws a ton of sinkers in same-handed match-ups, which is one of Turner’s best pitches to hit. Since the start of 2019, he owns a .426 wOBA vs sinkers.
