NBA DFS 1/5/23 – Ben’s Building Blocks

What’s up everyone and welcome to Ben’s Building Blocks! If you’ve never read my content before, welcome. To those that have, welcome back. I truly appreciate everyone that reads and supports during NBA season. This article is designed for me to highlight the top plays of the day. Obviously, things can change rapidly in the NBA with injury news close to lock, so I would be sure to subscribe to our premium package for access to our Final Thoughts cheat sheet, our premium discord channel and my core plays. Our Core Plays product gives you the ability to tail all of our analysts in your contests each night. We do the work for you, and you simply plug and play with our premium Core Plays. With that being said, let’s hop into the plays…

Building Blocks

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic simply needs no introduction, and he’s the highest priced and projected player on tonight’s four game slate. He’s averaging over 1.8 fantasy points per minute with their current starting lineup, truly incredible rates for someone firmly in the MVP conversation. It’s tough to see anyone matching is output if he really pops off tonight, and for that reason I don’t think you can fade him in any cash game / single entry format. It’s crazy, but I actually think this price tag might be too low on a small slate.

Dillon Brooks

Brooks is popping with around 30% projected ownership tonight, with Desmond Bane out for the Grizzlies. Brooks sees the largest usage rate increase with Bane off the floor — around 3% spiking him to an overall rate of 27%. He’s already capable of posting around a fantasy point per minute, so with Bane off the floor that gives him a much bigger opportunity on offense. Brooks is not someone that’s shy of taking shots, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 15+ FGA from him tonight. He’s priced perfectly in the mid-tier, and should check in as one of the higher-owned options on all sites tonight.

Value Plays

John Konchar

Initially today, KJ Martin from Houston was popping as the top-overall projected value play. This shows how quickly things can change in the NBA, with Erick Gordon and Jae’Sean Tate now expected to play he is no longer a playable option. This shifts our focus to John Konchar as the top value, with Desmond Bane out for the Grizzlies. Konchar will step into the starting lineup for Bane, and we’ve seen him be a productive fantasy option when filling in already this season. He isn’t a super strong per minute producer, but he’s someone that projects well and has value at his price tag and will allow us to fit in someone like Luka into our builds.

My next favorite value play tonight, would probably be Jabari Smith.

Jayson Tatum

I love the idea of pairing Tatum with Luka Doncic in large-field tournaments tonight. Dallas has really struggled to defend wing scoring without their best on-ball defender in Dorian Finney-Smith — and went for 37 in their last match-up. This is a nationally televised game featuring just a three point spread – and I could certainly see both Luka and Tatum taking over this game.
