Everyone grab your mint juleps and derby hats! It’s the first Saturday in May, which can only mean one thing! 20 horses will compete in the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby winning purse is $2 Million. This is the longest continually held sporting event in America with a crowd of around 155,00 watching on. This is a 3 year old race with a distance of one and a quarter mile long. They will be running on a dirt track at Churchill Downs located in Louisville, Kentucky. This will be the first race in the Triple Crown. Since Orbs win in 2013, you have to be in the top 3 on the first turn to win. This years best pace horses are Maximum Security, Omaha Beach, and Game winner. Favorites have won the last 6 Derby’s.

The Bets:

Omaha Beach 5-1

Omaha Beach is coming off a win at the Arkansas Derby which supported a stacked field . Beach has been able to race well from any position. Jockey Big Money Mike Smith has chose to ride Omaha Beach over the other favorite Roadster who is trained by Bob Baffert. This is telling that Omaha Beach has serious potential to win the Derby. He also follows in on the trend of a favorite winning the last 6 Derby’s.

Game Winner 6.5-1

Game Winner comes into the Derby being the Breeders Cup Juvenile Champion here at Churchill Downs. He is the most consistent horse in the race. He is trained by Bob Baffert, who looks for his 6th Derby win. He won all 4 of his races as a 2 year old. In his first 2 races as a 3 year old he has 2 narrow loses to both Derby Co-Favorites in Roadster and Omaha Beach. He has shown he can win here at Churchill and will look to do so and get revenge over his first 2 defeats as a 3 year old.

Maxium Security 10-1

Maxium Security is coming in off a win at the Florida Derby which was his strongest competition field to date.  He has 4 starts and 4 wins which has mostly come in lesser competition. Maxium Security has strong and improving speed figures and should set some blazing fractions. With his lesser average competition he is a little bit of a wildcard here with serious upside.

By My Standards 25-1

By My Standards has finished in the top 3 in all 5 of his starts. He is coming off his best race yet as we head into the Derby. Jockey Gabriel Saez has said he is moving effortless in practice, blazing around the track. I expect him to be in contention late with a chance to steal the Derby.

Longshot:

Hailkal 30-1
