NBA DFS 1/17/23 – Ben’s Building Blocks

What’s up everyone and welcome to Ben’s Building Blocks! If you’ve never read my content before, welcome. To those that have, welcome back. I truly appreciate everyone that reads and supports during NBA season. This article is designed for me to highlight the top plays of the day. Obviously, things can change rapidly in the NBA with injury news close to lock, so I would be sure to subscribe to our premium package for access to our Final Thoughts cheat sheet, our premium discord channel and my core plays. Our Core Plays product gives you the ability to tail all of our analysts in your contests each night. We do the work for you, and you simply plug and play with our premium Core Plays. With that being said, let’s hop into the plays…

Building Blocks

Bobby Portis

Portis and Jrue Holiday will once again be considered cash game must plays with Giannis and Khris Middleton still out for the Bucks. These two absolutely dominate with those guys off the floor — leading the team in fantasy point per minute production by a wide-margin. We have had a few slates like this recently, but with just four games to choose from tonight it’s really hard to avoid these two in any format. You can always get weird in GPPs, but we have both tagged with over 40% ownership projections on Tuesday night.

Ben Simmons

Outside of the Bucks, it looks like the Nets will be even thinner tonight with Kyrie Irving receiving the dreaded mid-day downgrade to questionable to play. They’re already without Kevin Durant, and if Irving is out also that would boost Ben Simmons a ton in the mid-tier. Simmons doesn’t own a huge usage rate with those two guys off the floor, but his fantasy point per minute number is one of the best on the team and we know that he will have the ball in his hands more. Simmons is a legit triple-double threat leading an offense if he can put the ball in the bucker, but a pace-up spot against the Spurs could be exactly what he needs to get things rolling. I thought he was a strong play with Irving active, if he happens to miss then he’s one of the top plays on the slate for me.

Value Plays

Seth Curry

Curry would also be a top-value should Irving miss — he actually leads the team in usage rate at 30% with Durant and Kyrie off the court this season. This one we will need the news on, I think he’s a fine play regardless but he goes from a good to a great play with Kyrie out — whereas Simmons is playable for me either way. I’m going to assume Irving out as of now, meaning Curry will be one of the highest owned options on the slate.

Ivica Zubac

I love Big Zu tonight, and I’m hoping people end up avoiding him due to his match-up against Joel Embiid. This game should be close, with the Clippers just two point favorites and we have seen Zubac put together some big games recently. He’s actually averaging a double-double this season and tends to play more minutes against teams with traditional centers…like Joel Embiid. He ended up playing 34 minutes against the 76ers earlier this season, and I think he has a pretty decent ceiling at his price-tag if we see 30+ out of him tonight. I doubt he comes in with a ton of ownership, but he’s one of my favorite options on the slate.
